Is this happening only with that document? Are you trying to save in Word
97-2003 format, or in Word 2007 format?

What happens if you save in .rtf format or some other format?

I have tried to save in both. I thought the problem might be that It was
originally an office 2003 doc. so I tried to create a new document from
scratch and it still crashes. I read on another forum that deleting the
12.0/Word/Data key might help. I did that and let it rebuild it. Still
crashes. I can however, save the documents as templates .dot with no problem.
Any thoughts?

Thinking the Normal.dotm file might be corrupted, I also renamed the file and
let word rebuild it. Same problem

Is this happening with all documents, or only with that one?

What happens if you start Word in Safe mode? Hold down Ctrl as Word is
starting, then click Yes to starting in Safe mode.

Herb -

I am having the same problem. Each time I open an existing document the
cursor is frozen at the beginning. When I shut down Word I get an error
message saying that "Word has stopped working" - then "Word is trying to
recover information" - then "Word has stopped working" (again) with a button
to shut it down. I can type a new document and save it OK, but when I
re-open it the same thing happens. In fact - I get this string of messages
if I simply open and immediately close Word.

I can save new documents and I can print new documents. However, when I
press the Office button and go to Word Options, only the "Popular" tab is
available - I cannot go to "Display" or "Trust Center" for instance. Also, I
seem to have lost my ability to open Word by double-clicking a Word document
in an e-mail (MS Outlook) attachment.

I've tried the diagnosis program - no joy. I've tried repairing my Office
installation - no joy. I've removed and re-installed Office - no joy.

Things do seem to work OK when I start Word in Safe Mode.

The problem occurs only with Word - not Excel or other Office applications.

Word was working fine for about 2 weeks - and then this problem just
started. I've installed no other software or hardware.

Any thoughts? Thanks,
Rick

It would suggest several possibilities:

A corrupt printer driver
Corrupt normal.dotx
Corrupt building blocks.dotx
An incompatible third party add-in that has been installed it last worked
correctly

See if this linked FAQ helps with the diagnosis:
