Word - Red X in Word documents

Asked By Mike on 05-Mar-07 01:29 PM
I'm using Word 2003 (11.8125).

In a Word document, I have several spreadsheets that are embedded. Instead
of the Excel icon apppearing for each spreadsheet, I'm seeing the border of
the icon, it is greyed, and there is a red X in the top left corner of the
bordered area.

Allow me to gve you another example of the red X. If I copy and paste a
figure into my document, the figure doesn't appear. Rather, I see the same
thing as I mentioned above - the border of the figure, and it is greyed, and
there is a red X in the top left corder of the greyed area.

I've tried the Alt+F9 suggestion, but this just shows the field codes inside
of the greyed area.

In Tools | Options | View tab, the check boxes for Field codes, Hidden text,
and All are unchecked.

In Tools | Options | Print tab, the check boxes for Field codes and Hidden
text are unchecked.

It seems graphics are not appearing in ANY of my Word documents - not just
this doc.

I am at a loss for ideas on how I can get the Excel icons to appear or even
to get the figure to display properly.

Any suggestions you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike M.

Is Tools Options->View "Picture Placeholders" checked? That might be the
cause.

Hi Renee,

thanks for replying back so quickly. The Picture Placeholder check box was
unchecked. Checking it doesn't make any of the graphics appear.

I guess if I can't figure it out within the next couple of days, I will have
to reload Word.

Thanks for the suggestion.

KB Article 825772 suggests:

To work around this problem, turn off the Update links on save option in
Word 2003. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Start Word 2003.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. Click the General tab, and then click Web Options.
4. Click the Files tab, and then click to clear the Update links on save
check box.
5. Click OK two times.

Worth a try...

Checking "Picture placeholders" results in an empty box, not a red X.
