Word - I can't get the hyperlink character style to apply to an actual hyperlink.

I am writing a tutorial. I would like to put in some hyperlink
references. I would like them formatted as blue and underlined as is
typical on the web.

I have the heading references working and I can ctrl-click on them and
jump around the document. But if I try to apply the hyperlink style to
an actual hyperlink, the appearance of the text is not changed.

If I apply it to regular text, it turns blue and underlined.

Help!

This is Word 2007.

Word has some pretty much undocumented rules about this: the Hyperlink style
is applied by default to all hyperlinks, but it is suppressed for TOC
entries and hyperlinked cross-references, so, since it appears you are
dealing with cross-references, that is the problem. Ironically, if you unlink
one of these hyperlinks (by pressing Ctrl+Shift+F9), then the Hyperlink
style is displayed.

What you can do in this instance is create another character style, also
blue and hyperlinked, and apply it to the cross-reference, or you can apply
this formatting manually. For more on this, see

Yikes. I read the article and the referenced one about character styles,
which it appears I also need. The articles seem very well constructed
and I am sure a lot of work went into them. it is just that there are so
many options that I fear it will take me hours of trial and error to get
it right.

I am wondering if you would be willing to provide me with a simple
step-by-step procedure for making all existing hyperlink reference
fields and any new ones display with the same formatting as I get if I
type "www.abs.com".

There are only a few references now, but I expect to have quite a few as
I write the tutorial.

I have a little test document with these lines:

What do I do now to get the last 3 lines to format as blue underlined
like line 4?

Then, how do I get any new hyperlink references to automatically format
that way?

Select the REF fields and apply blue and underline formatting as direct
formatting. That may well be enough. If necessary, add the \* Charformat
switch to the REF field. If you want to define a character style that is blue
and underline and apply that, you can do it with one click instead of two. I
do not know of any way to get new REF fields to have that formatting by
default. The very complex Find and Replace operation described in the
article will do it after the fact, but I do not know of any way to make it
automatic.
